You will have an initial meeting with your Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, or Physiotherapist in order to gather client information and a background history, including medical information, previous therapies received and, developmental milestones, as well as to describe concerns and to determine whether a formal assessment is needed. Diagnostic testing or an Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy assessment usually will begin at this appointment, after the intake portion of the session has been completed.
If you have paperwork or reports from other professionals (doctors, speech, occupational or physical therapists, schools) it may be helpful to have this information with you to share with your Speech-Language Pathologist/Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist so they have current information on you, your family member, or your child.
When appropriate, we will provide a thorough assessment using standardized and/or non-standardized measures, to determine whether speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy will be appropriate for you or your child. Following the assessment, individual skills are determined and, if therapy is warranted, goals will be developed, with family input, to outline a program to meet the current needs of the person who will be receiving therapy services. We can provide a detailed report to outline skills, identify strengths and weaknesses, and state our recommendations. Goals are always developed and provided to families.
Usually there is not a wait to begin therapy and sessions can start within a few weeks or less. Therapy sessions are 30, 45, or 60 minutes in duration for speech therapy and occupational therapy and typically clients receive therapy on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Sometimes clients are seen more or less often. Physiotherapy sessions are booked either as an initial assessment or follow-up session and are not time specific.
We do not direct bill to most health plans but will provide you with invoices that can be used to submit to private health insurance companies. If you do have private health insurance, you may have speech or occupational therapy coverage so, it is a good idea to look at, or call about, your plan to see what your plan offers. Typically, private insurance does not offer sufficient coverage to meet all of the costs of private therapy but it may cover a portion of the fees.
A referral from a physician is NOT needed for private speech and language therapy however, some private insurance companies may require a doctor's referral in order to cover these services, though this is uncommon. Occupational therapy and physiotherapy services may require a doctor's referral.
We take payment by cash, cheque, or e-transfer at the time of an appointment.
